Brittney Griner Top Pick in WNBA Draft by Phoenix

BRISTOL, Conn. - Baylor post Brittney Griner made Baylor history again when she was selected as the No. 1 overall pick in the 2013 WNBA draft on Monday evening in Bristol, Conn., at ESPN headquarters. When the Phoenix Mercury drafted the 6-8 standout, she became the program's eighth WNBA draftee.

Prior to Griner's No. 1 selection, current San Antonio Silver Stars standout Sophia Young held the honor of the highest BU selection when the Silver Stars selected her as the No. 4 overall pick in the 2006 draft.

In addition to Griner, Brooklyn Pope was selected in the third round (No. 28 overall) by the Chicago Sky, tying for the most Lady Bears taken in a draft (2002 when Sheila Lambert and Danielle Crockrom were drafted No. 7 and No. 11).

Griner, a Houston native, swept all of the nation's player awards the last two seasons and ended her four-year career as the NCAA's top shot blocker (748) and female dunker (18) and ranks No. 2 on the NCAA Division I women's scoring chart with 3,283 career points. Throughout her illustrious career, Griner averaged 22.2 points, 8.8 rebounds and 5.1 blocks per game and hit 56.9 percent of her shots from the floor and 74.7 percent from the free throw line.

"I am very excited to have the opportunity to play basketball at the next level. I grew up watching the Houston Comets and always aspired to play in the WNBA. This is a dream come true for me," said Griner.
