WACO, Texas - A trio of Lady Bears, two former and one current, are included on a list of 33 athletes who have accepted an invitation to attend the 2013 USA Women's National Team mini-camp, Oct. 4-6 in Las Vegas.
Former Baylor standouts, Brittney Griner and Sophia Young, along with current Lady Bear senior Odyssey Sims, will attend the camp, held at the Cox Pavilion practice gym on the campus of UNLV. The camp will be used to identify players for the USA National Team pool, from which the 2013 USA World Championship Team will be selected. Invitations were issued by the USA Basketball Women's National Team Player Selection Committee.
"It is great recognition for our program and certainly those three players are very deserving," said Baylor head coach Kim Mulkey. "They are outstanding basketball players and I'm so happy for them, it's an honor for all three of them to be selected."
All three players have competed for USA Basketball internationally, Griner and Young both played on the 2011 USA Basketball Women's National Team European tour, while Sims has won a pair of gold medals from the 2011 and 2013 USA World University Games teams, earning World University Games Co-MVP honors in 2013.
"I think it will be fun," said Sims. "I can take it as a learning experience, being able to learn and get a feel for what it will be like. Anytime I can play and get invited to play with USA or USA related, I'm always pumped and I'm excited just to play with them, because it is such an honor."
Griner and Young are both current WNBA players for the Phoenix Mercury and San Antonio Silver Stars, respectively, while Sims and her Baylor teammates begin practice for the 2013-14 season on Oct. 7.
