BAYLOR VS. ST. EDWARD'S HILLTOPPERS
Baylor and the St. Edward's Hilltoppers meet for the second time in an exhibition contest. The Lady Bears downed the Hilltoppers, 97-43, last season in Waco. The game marks Baylor's first exhibition game of the season.
THE LADY BEARS
The Lady Bears come into their first action of the season with 11 returning letterwinners, including four starters off last season's 27-10 squad, including Brittney Griner. The 6-8 sophomore post averaged 18.4 points and 8.5 rebounds during her rookie season while earning USBWA and Big 12 Freshman of the Year. Her 223 blocks as a freshman rank sixth on the Big 12 career list while it eclipsed the NCAA Division I record for blocks in a season. Joining Griner as returning starters are senior guards Kelli Griffin and Melissa Jones and sophomore guard Shanay Washington. The Lady Bears return 86.2 percent of their scoring and 81.0 percent of individual rebounds from last season's NCAA Final Four team.
The St. Edward's Hilltoppers, an NCAA Division II school in Austin, Texas, are members of the Heartland Conference. Two starters and nine letterwinners return off last year's squad that finished 9-20.
The Hilltoppers are led by head coach Jennifer White who is beginning her eighth season on the Austin campus. White is very familiar with Baylor's coaching staff as she played at Louisiana Tech beginning in 1979. While on the Ruston, La., campus, she was a member of the 1981 AIAW Division I and 1982 NCAA Division I national championship teams. After earning her master's degree at her alma mater, she was hired as an assistant coach by Leon Barmore and spent 1985 through 1990 with the Lady Techsters. Current Baylor head coach Kim Mulkey was a Lady Techster assistant at that same time. In addition, White spent three seasons as an assistant coach at the University of Texas under Jody Conradt.
The Field family, with a daughter in each uniform, will be divided on Monday. Ashley, a 6-2 junior post, wears the green and gold of Baylor while her sister, Kendra, a 5-8 freshman guard, will be donning the navy blue and vegas gold of St. Edward's.
Baylor will host the Texas A&M-International in its final exhibition game on Friday, Nov. 5, in the Ferrell Center at 7 p.m. Baylor will open the regular season on Friday, Nov. 12 against Florida International when it hosts the four-team, three-day World Vision Invitational. Joining Baylor and Florida International in the tournament will be Rice and Montana State.
