THE LADY BEARS
The Lady Bears come into their first action of the season with eight returning letterwinners, including one starter, point guard Kelli Griffin, off last season's 29-6 squad.
Baylor's lone senior, Morghan Medlock, will team with seven other returnees, juniors Griffin, Melissa Jones and Whitney Zachariason, and sophomores, Terran Condrey, Ashley Field, Lindsay Palmer and Cherrish Wallace to lead the Lady Bears this season. The Lady Bears welcome the nation's top-rated freshman class, Mariah Chandler, Brittney Griner, Kimetria Hayden, Jordan Madden and Shanay Washington, to the court this season.
The St. Edward's Hilltoppers, an NCAA Division II school in Austin, Texas, are members of the Heartland Conference. Three starters and six letterwinners return off last year's squad that finished 15-13.
The Hilltoppers are led by head coach Jennifer White who is beginning her seventh season on the Austin campus. White is very familiar with Baylor's coaching staff as she played at Louisiana Tech beginning in 1979. While on the Ruston, La., campus, she was a member of the 1981 AIAW Division I and 1982 NCAA Division I national championship teams. After earning her master's degree at her alma mater, she was hired as an assistant coach by Leon Barmore and spent 1985 through 1990 with the Lady Techsters. Current Baylor head coach Kim Mulkey was a Lady Techster assistant at that same time. In addition, White spent three seasons as an assistant coach at the University of Texas under Jody Conradt.
Baylor will host the Incarnate Word Cardinals in its final exhibition game on Saturday, Nov. 7, in the Ferrell Center at 7 p.m. Baylor's regular season gets underway Nov. 15 when it travels to Knoxville, Tenn., to take on the Tennessee Lady Vols in the State Farm Tip-Off Classic. The contest will be televised on ESPN2 and will tip off at 4 p.m. (CT).
