WACO, Texas - Two high school women's basketball standouts have signed National Letters of Intent for 2014-15, Baylor head coach Kim Mulkey announced Wednesday. Signing to attend Baylor were Dekeiya Cohen and Micayla Buckner.
"These two players provide us with speed and athleticism at the post position. They are both student-athletes of high character and outstanding work ethic, and come from great families. We are proud to welcome Micayla and Dekeiya to Baylor Nation," said Mulkey.
Cohen, a 6-2 power forward from West Ashley High School in Charleston, S.C., has the ability to play inside or step out and play on the perimeter. She was chosen to compete in the USA Basketball's 3-on-3 competition last summer and plays AAU basketball for the Georgia Metros.
As a junior, Cohen received all-state and all-region honors and is projected to be one of the top players in South Carolina this year. The versatile power forward averaged 26.7 points, 13.0 rebounds, 4.7 steals, 4.1 assists and 3.5 blocks during her junior year and is ranked seventh at her position and No. 30 nationally by Prospects Nation.
A 6-3 post, Buckner averaged 13.3 points and 12.2 rebounds per contest for Garland's (Texas) Naaman Forest High School. The three-time all-district performer also earned district Defensive Player of the Year honors as a junior.
Buckner is selected as one of the top five players in the metroplex area and was named to the Dallas Morning News' all-area team. She is ranked as the No. 7 prospect in the state of Texas by Premier Basketball Report.
