    Howard trailed No. 1 Baylor even before tipoff because of a technical foul. Things only got worse in the season opener once Brittney Griner and the Lady Bears really got their hands on the ball. Baylor scored the game's first 28 points, including the technical free throw because Howard didn't turn in its starting lineup in time, and went on to an 82-28 victory in a preseason WNIT game Friday night.     "You know, that's a reflection of the kids you coach.     The U.S. Basketball Writers Association has selected Baylor forward Brittney Griner as its Women's National Player of the Week for games ending the week of Sunday, Dec. 18. The USBWA's weekly honor will be handed out each Tuesday through Feb. 21 this season. As the Big 12 Conference Player of the Week, Griner was nominated for the weekly award, which was chosen by a representative of the USBWA board of directors from a list of Division I conference players of the week.     Baylor and Iowa State both succeeded in what they wanted to do defensively. The difference was that No. 1 Baylor had Brittney Griner and Iowa State didn't. Griner scored 26 points and her teammates contributed just enough to carry the Lady Bears past Iowa State 57-45 on Saturday night. On Monday, March 19, the selection committee will review the 52 candidates and trim the list to 40 finalists, all of whom will all be in the running for selection to the 10-member WBCA Division I Coaches' All-America Team.     Brittney Griner took a pass from a teammate, stepped toward the basket, stretched out her right arm and slammed the ball through. Griner became the second woman to dunk in an NCAA tournament game Tuesday night, and top-seeded Baylor rolled to a 76-57 win over ninth-seeded Florida.
