The No. 7 Baylor equestrian team (7-3) began their spring season with a 14-5 victory over New Mexico State (3-6) Saturday morning at the NM State Equestrian Center. The Bears, who earned MVP honors in each event, are now on a four-match winning streak.
"It was great to get back to competition," head coach Ellen White said. "Wins on the road are tough to come by. Our girls did a great job of reading their horses and adjusting to their ride."
The meet began with a 4-1 victory for Baylor in Fences. Samantha Schaefer's 86 earned MVP honors, while Paige Parker (81), Lindsey Otis (80) and Ashley Ann McGehee (78) also contributed points for the Bears.
Furthering their lead, BU beat NM State 3-2 in Flat to make it 7-3. Earning her second MVP award of the day, Schaefer scored an 85. Jenny Mitchell (81) and Melanie Appel (78) also won points for Baylor.
Baylor continued its lead to 10-4 after a 3-1 victory in Horsemanship. Mary Brown's 74.5 earned MVP honors, while with Bryn Lindley (74) and Gillian Chant (74) also winning points to defeat NM State.
The Bears finished off the Aggies with a 4-1 win in Reining. Shelbey Jackson (73) earned MVP, as Parris Rice (73), Olivia Rogers (69.5) and Claire Edwards (72) won the final points contributing to the Baylor win.
Baylor will next be in action when the Western squad takes on TCU on Fri., Feb. 8, followed by Hunter Seat on Sat., Feb. 9. Both meets will be held in Fort Worth.
