The No. 4 Baylor Equestrian team (7-1) began its spring season with a 12-7 victory over No. 9 New Mexico State (6-5) Friday afternoon at the Willis Family Equestrian Center. The win keeps the Bears undefeated (6-0) at home in 2011-12.
" I thought this was a great way to begin what will be a very tough spring season," head coach Ellen White said. "We have worked very hard, and while I know we weren't perfect today, this team is extremely talented."
The meet began with a 3-2 Baylor win in Fences. Lisa Goldman's 82 was the highest score in the discipline, while Ashley Ann McGehee (78) and Sue Carol Thompson (78) all earned points for the Bears.
Baylor widened the gap to 7-3 with a 4-3 victory in Flat. Lisa Goldman (90) earned MVP honors with season-high score, while Kara Fergusson (80), Melaine Appel (75) and Kim Woodsum (74) picking up the rest of the points.
With the 7-3 win, the Hunter Seat team remained undefeated on the season.
Holding a four-point lead, the two squads tied 2-2 in Horsemanship. Meghan Murphy (76.5) earned MVP honors with Bryn Lindley (75.5) also contributing a point.
Holding a four-point advantage, Baylor wrapped up the meet win with a 3-2 victory in Reining. Olivia Rogers (72.5) earned MVP honors, with Ellie Powell (70) and Amber Mooney (72) rounding out the points.
The Bears will have two weeks to prepare for their next meet against No. 5 Oklahoma State on Saturday, Feb. 18 at 10:00 a.m. at the Willis Family Equestrian Center.
