The No. 6 Baylor equestrian team (9-5) fell in heartbreaking fashion to No. 2 Auburn (9-1), losing on raw scores (1603-1599) after a 10-10 tie on Saturday morning at the Willis Family Equestrian Center in Waco. This was the last home meet for Baylor this year and senior day.
"This was the last meet of the season and it is hard to hand over a meet like that," said head coach Ellen White. "But it was so close and to come down to all those raw scores, thousands of points, and we only lost by four, it shows how tight it was and they rode well. I feel confident going into our postseason."
The meet began with a loss of 3-2 for the Bears in Fences. Samantha Schaefer earned MOP with the score of 90 while Jenny Mitchell's 85 also earned a point for Baylor.
BU took the 6-4 lead after a 4-1 defeat of Auburn in Flat. Samantha Schaefer earned MOP honors for the second time with a score of 90. Also earning points for the Bears were Melanie Appel (78), Taylor Brown (86) and Jenny Mitchell (68).
Narrowing the gap to one, Auburn beat Baylor in Horsemanship 3-2. Parris Rice's 77 earned MOP honors and Mary Brown's 71 also earned a point for BU.
Entering Reining with an 8-7 lead, the meet ended in a 10-10 tie after a loss of 3-2 for Baylor. Claire Edwards (73) and Katherine Berg (71) earned the points for BU.
The team will look ahead to compete post-season at the Big 12 Championship in Stillwater, Okla. on March 29-30.
