Western Riders Place Fifth in IHSA Show

March 4, 2006

COLLEGE STATION, Texas - In the first day of competition at Texas A&M's Western IHSA show at N.W. "Dick" Freeman Arena, Baylor's riders earned 15 points to place fifth out of the nine schools who competed. Oklahoma State finished first with 32 points while Texas A&M finished second with 27 points.

The show's high-point rider honor went to Texas A&M's Debbie Ramirez, and the Reserve high-point rider was Oklahoma State's Brianne Wiebe.

For Baylor in the Reining portion of the show, Brenna Burris and Kendra Kemp both placed first in their sections, I and II respectfully. Ashleigh Brown placed sixth in section II while Amanda Esco placed fourth in section III.

Nicole McCoy ranked at the top of her section I Novice Horsemanship group and Kim Crook also placed first in Novice Horsemanship in section II. In the Open Horsemanship events, Brown earned a second-place finish in section II while Burris placed fourth in section III.

Kim Marlowe, Stephanie Thompson, and Kemp were all reserve riders in their Horsemanship sections.

Overall, the Bears improved since the last time they competed in a Western IHSA show which was hosted by Oklahoma State in November. There, Baylor placed seventh the first day. On the second day they placed fourth and hope to have the same jump of improvement this weekend.

"They did really well. Everything is starting to fall in place so we are showing the horses instead of being nervous about showing. It's a young team, but now we are starting to get that valuable experience," said assistant coach Trista Armstrong. "Our riders are really thinking smart so things are starting to slow down and settle, which is great."

The same riders and events will take place tomorrow in College Station and Baylor's results will be available at www.baylorbears.com.

Full show results will be posted at www.aggieathletics.com.
