Equestrian Wins First-Ever Big 12 Title

WACO, Texas - The No. 7 Baylor Equestrian Team (8-8) defeated No. 3 Texas A&M 9-6 Saturday afternoon in the final day of the Big 12 Championships at the Willis Family Equestrian Center in Waco. This marks the Bears first-ever Big 12 Title.

"We won with good rides, but the other team rode well too," Coach Ellen White said. "When you just won this tournament, you know you just won something great because we were against worthy opponents."

Baylor began the competition in good fashion, winning Equitation over Fences 3-1. Lisa Goldman earned MVP honors with a score of 170. Taylor Brown and Heather Healy also scored for Baylor.

The Bears continued to stretch their lead with a 3-1 win on Equitation on the Flat. Margaret Beudoin, Mary Smitson and Melanie Appel all scored for the Bears. Smitson's score of 166 earned her MVP honors and resulted in Baylor having a 6-2 advantage through half of the events.

Texas A&M made a slight comeback, winning Horsemanship 2-1. Meghan Murphy scored the lone point for Baylor.

Despite an attempted comeback by the Aggies, Baylor was able to hold onto their lead with a 2-2 tie in the Reining competition. Amber Mooney and Lindsey Tomko scored points for the Bears. Mooney's 147-144.5 victory earned her MVP honors and resulted in Baylor defeating the Aggies 9-6 and taking home the Big 12 trophy.

Oklahoma State 11, Kansas State 5 Despite beginning the competition tied 2-2 after Equitation over Fences, Oklahoma State was able to pull away to earn an 11-5 victory over Kansas State. The Cowgirls won Hunter Seat 6-2 and Western 5-3.

The Bears will be back in action April 15 when they compete in the National Championships at the Heart of Texas Coliseum in Waco.
