STILLWATER, Okla. - The No. 4 seed Baylor equestrian team (10-6) secured a third place finish with a 8-7 win over No. 2 seed TCU in the consolation match of the Big 12 Championship Saturday afternoon at the Animal Science Arena in Stillwater, Okla.

"I am proud of the whole team," head coach Ellen Whitesaid. "I think we are in a good position and frame of mind heading to Nationals."

Samantha Schaefer was named the Championship's Most Outstanding Performer for Fences after going 2-0 with a pair of MVP's.

The Hunter Seat squad picked up a 4-3 win, while Western earned a 4-4 tie. Baylor held a 6-5 advantage going into Reining, needing just a 2-2 tie hold on to the victory, which it earned.

The Bears opened with a 2-1 win in Fences as Samantha Schaefer earned MVP with an 180, while Ashley Ann McGehee's155 picked up the other point. Fences marked the only non-tied event.

Baylor then recorded a 2-2 tie in Horsemanship, as Ashley Garza (142.5) and Mary Brown(140) registered BU's points.

Holding a 4-3 lead at the midway point, another 2-2 tie found the Bears in Flat. Schaefer picked up her second point of the day with a 169, while Melanie Appelsecured the second point to maintain the one-point lead.

Needing just a two points in Reining for the win, Katherine Berg (136) and Shelbey Jackson(130) did just that, pulling out the 8-7 victory.

At the ceremony following the Championship, three Baylor riders were named to the All-Big 12 team. Schaefer earned the honor for both Fences and Flat, while Taylor Brown was named for Flat. On the Western side, Bryn Lindley earned All-Big 12 honors for Horsemanship.

The Bears will await their seeding for the NCEA Championship held in Waco at the Extraco Events Center on April 18-20.
