The No. 6 Baylor Equestrian team (3-0) captured its fifth-consecutive Willis invitational Saturday at the Willis Equestrian Center. The Bears collected a 13-2 win over Delaware State and capped off the day with an 11-5 victory over No. 10 New Mexico State.
"I think we did a great job," head coach Ellen White said. "We really got to see what our freshmen were up against going into the season. The horses did well and the girls rode them well. Overall it was a great weekend."
Continuing their second round after completing half Friday, the Bears furthered their lead to 10-2 with a 3-1 victory over the Hornets in Fences. Samantha Schaefer's 90 earned MVP honors, while Sue Carol Thompson (84) and Kate Riddle (86) also contributed points.
The second round ended with Baylor defeating Delaware State 3-0 in reining, making the final score 13-2. Olivia Rogers (70.5), Mary Brown (71.5) and Shelbey Jackson (72.5) all earned points for the BU win.
Needing a win over the Aggies to claim the title, BU began with 4-0 victory in Fences. Ashley Ann McGehee's 92 won MVP honors. Taylor Brown (91), Samantha Schaefer (84) and Paige Parker (90) also contributed points for Bears.
Furthering the lead, BU won Reining 3-1 with Parris Rice (70), Olivia Rogers (72) and Shelbey Jackson (75) all earning points for Baylor.
The meet ended with a 2-2 tie in both Horsemanship and Flat, making the final score 11-5. In Horsemanship Parris Rice
(74.5) earned MVP honors, with Gillian Chant
(74) also earning a point. In Flat, both Samantha Schaefer
(92) and Taylor Brown
(88) won points for Baylor.
The Bears will be on the road for their next meet against Kansas State on Friday, October 5.
