WACO, Texas – No. 5 Baylor equestrian (1-0) opened its 2017-18 season with a commanding 18-2 win over West Texas A&M (0-1) on Friday morning at the Willis Family Equestrian Center, setting a new program record for most points scored in a single contest.
The meet was the first for the Bears under first-year head coach Casie Maxwell, kicking off her Baylor career with a strong victory in her return to coaching.
Starting with fences and horsemanship, the Bears all but had the meet wrapped up at the halfway point, sweeping their way out to a 10-0 lead at the break.
In fences, Gia Gulino, Gabby Conte, Michelle Mallett, and Abby Jorgensen all took home their points, with Shannon Hogue adding the fifth point and securing MOP (Most Outstanding Performance) honors with her meet-high score of 83.
Flipping to flat and reining, the Lady Buffs managed their only two points in the competition in the reining discipline, with BU still taking the event by a 3-2 margin.
The flat team finished off a 10-0 sweep for BU over the WTAMU, going 5-0 in the back half of the hunt seat side of the competition.
• Freshman Michelle Mallett made her debut for the Bears, earning both her points and taking an MOP award in flat.
• Freshman Clara Johnson made her debut for the Bears, winning her point and matching Abbi Demel for the meet-high score in horsemanship with a 75.
• Freshmen Carly Salter and Sydney Scheckel took their BU debuts in reining, with Salter winning her point and Scheckel falling by a half point.

Baylor jumps into Big 12 play on Oct. 7, facing Oklahoma State in Stillwater, Okla. BU stays on the road for the next four meets, not returning to Willis until Feb. 2 when Auburn comes to town.
