Baylor opened the 2010-11 season with a 10-5 win over Delaware State in the first round of the Willis Invitational on Friday at the Willis Family Equestrian Center. The Bears will wrap up the competition against Miami (Ohio)/Ohio State in the morning before taking on New Mexico State.
"For as early as it is, I am happy with the way we did," head coach Ellen White said. "We have plenty of room for improvement, but we get to come back tomorrow and do just that."
Baylor opened the competition with Reining, tying the Hornets 2-2. Amber Mooney led the way with an MVP performance for the Bears scoring a event-high 73, while Katie Buss picked up the other point with a 68.
The Bears took control in Horsemanship, picking up a 3-1 win with MVP Chelsea Retmier (72), Meghan Murphy (71) and Emily Polhemus earning points for BU, giving the western team the 5-3 win.
Baylor began Hunter Seat on the right foot, picking up a 3-0 win on Flat ensuring the victory. Kara Fergusson took home MVP honors with an 83, while Kim Woodsum (79) and Melanie Appel (76) earned points for the Bears.
The Bears earned a 2-2 tie in Fences, picking up the 10-5 win. Taylor Brown (82) dominated her opponent for the point, while Kendra Vicary locked up a point with a 78.
Action resumes Saturday morning at 9:00 a.m. at the Willis Family Equestrian Center.
