Equestrian Opens With 10-5 Victory

Baylor opened the 2011-12 season with a 10-5 win over South Dakota State in the first round of the Willis Invitational on Friday at the Willis Family Equestrian Center. The Bears will wrap up the competition against Miami (Ohio) in the morning before taking on Fresno State.

"I was pleased with our performance today," head coach Ellen White said. "I think we got some nerves out of the way and will be ready for some tough competition tomorrow."

Baylor opened the competition with a 3-1 win in Fences. Kara Fergusson (74), Lindsey Otis (79) and Jordan Weaver (80) each registered points for the Bears.

BU followed with a 2-2 tie in Reining with a 72.5 from Olivia Rodgers and a 70.5 from Katie Berg. Despite a head-to-head loss, Barbara Aitken scored MVP honors.

Baylor maintained a two-point edge over SDSU with a 2-2 tie in Flat. Lisa Goldman recorded the highest point total of the day with an 83, while Sue Carrol Thompson had a 67 for a one-point win.

The Bears put South Dakota State away in Horsemanship by not losing one point en route to a 3-0 victory. Meghan Murphy (73.5), Blair Bergeson (72.5) and Chelsea Retmier (72) took home points, while Bryn Lindley's 74.5 picked up a tie.

Action resumes Saturday morning at 9:00 a.m. at the Willis Family Equestrian Center.
