Baylor's equestrian team defeated the New Mexico State Aggies 8-7 Saturday morning at the Willis Family Equestrian Center. The win is the Bears' first of the season, first against New Mexico State, and first in the program's new facilities. Baylor's April Wehle earned the show's Equitation over Fences MVP award.
The show opened with Western Reining in the outdoor arena where the Bears and Aggies each picked up two points. Madelyn Mooney's 68 narrowly defeated Ashley Dietz's 67.5, and Lindsey Tomko posted a 64.5 over Kate Chesley's 62.5 to earn Baylor's first two points.
Meanwhile in the covered arena, exhibition riders competed in Equitation on the Flat. Both Baylor and New Mexico State formed exhibition teams whose scores do not count toward the official final score. The riders rode strictly for competitive practice. Kelsey Ehlers was the only Bear to defeat her opponent, Sarah Suazo. Ehlers earned 45 points on her ride while Suazo zeroed.
In the official Flat runs, Baylor bested the Aggies 2-1. Shelby White and Cara Wilson both scored 49 points, enough to outscore Kathryn Dickson and Kristen Engel who both had 47-point rides. Nicole Brown and Catie Helmuth, the event's MVP, were the Flat's high point riders with 55.
At the conclusion of Reining and Flat, Baylor led New Mexico State 4-3.
The show continued with the Exhibition Horsemanship routines outdoors. Missy Gonzalez defeated Rachel Krause 70.5 to 70 while Lindsay Douglas bested Caitlyn Adams 69.5 to 65.5. The Aggies' Codi Binkerd picked up a point but the final Exhibition Horsemanship score favored Baylor 2-1.
Finishing up the Exhibition events, Baylor earned the final two points in Equitation over Fences. Ashley Hyten and Analisa Muti, the event's high-point riders, earned a point a piece with their 49-point rides while NMSU's Meg Keeley tallied a point for the Aggies.
Overall, Baylor's Exhibition team outscored New Mexico State 5-4.
In the show's official action, Baylor's Western riders tallied a single point in Horsemanship while the Aggies compiled three points, putting them in the overall lead 6-5. Nicole McCoy, the event's high-point rider, was the solo Bear to outscore her opponent, Kate Chesley, 69 to 67.5. NMSU's Younker was the event's MVP and high-point rider with her 71.5 score.
Heading into the official Fences action, Baylor needed to solid rides from all four Bears in order to reclaim the lead and earn the victory. Three riders earned the event's high score of 48 points, Baylor's Nicole Brown and Wehle and NMSU's Kristen Engel. Brown and Wehle's points put Baylor in the lead until Engel's point tied up the score at 7-7.
Mary Smitson was the final rider of the day and needed to beat Catie Helmuth's 43-point ride to seal the victory for Baylor. Smitson recorded 46 points and clinched the Bears' first 2006-07 victory 8-7.
The Bears travel next weekend to play two conference foes, Kansas State in Manhattan, Kan., Fri., Oct. 13, and Oklahoma State in Stillwater, Okla., Sat., Oct. 14.
