WACO, Texas - The No. 4 Baylor equestrian team avenged last season's Big 12 Championship loss to Oklahoma State by taking down the No. 7-ranked Cowgirls 12-8 Saturday at the Willis Family Equestrian Center. Paige Parker and Alicia Gasser each picked up Most Outstanding Player honors for their respective events to lead Baylor.
The Bears began in flat with a 4-1 victory before OSU countered with a 4-1 victory in horsemanship to knot the score at five. However, Baylor took a 4-1 win in fences and edged the Cowgirls in reining 3-2 to improve to 5-1 overall on the season and 2-1 in Big 12 competition.
Oklahoma State lost to Kansas State earlier in the season and the loss drops the Cowgirls to 0-2 in Big 12 competition. Baylor defeated the Cowgirls in the regular season last year Feb. 23, but fell to OSU in the Big 12 Championships, March 29.
- Paige Parker was named MOP for flat when she scored an 86 out-dueling OSU's Samantha Harrison by 10 points
- Alicia Gasser won the MOP in fences with a score of 82 and beat OSU's Elser, who scored 82
- Sam Schaefer and Jennifer Mitchell joined Gasser and Parker as Baylor athletes that won multiple events. All four riders took wins in flat and fences.
- Mary Brown took Baylor's lone win in horsemanship while Katherine Berg, Claire Edwards and Shelbey Jackson took wins in reining.
THEY SAID IT
Baylor Head Coach Ellen White on Baylor's victory
"We did a good job. There were a few places where we probably need to improve. A few girls made some mistakes, but other than that they did a good job of holding it all together, and putting it together for a win. The riders did well, and that was a tough team to beat."
Baylor will take nearly a month break before facing Auburn at home Nov. 22. The Tigers were ranked No. 2 in the latest NCEA rankings.
