WACO, Texas - Baylor's equestrian team will take to the road for the second straight week for a show with Stephen F. Austin (SFA) on Saturday, Feb. 2. The competition, SFA's first home show of 2008, will be held at the Walter C. Todd Agriculture Center and begins at 12:00 p.m.
The Lady Bears, 3-6 on the season, will face off against a Ladyjack team that is coming off a 10-2 loss to SMU in which only the Hunter Seat events were contested. Baylor opened its spring portion of the season last week when it traveled to New Mexico State and suffered an 11-8 loss.
Baylor and SFA have met once this season as part of the four-team Baylor Invitational. The Bears prevailed 8-4, winning Hunter Seat competition 4-2 and Western 4-2. Heather Healy led the Bears against SFA, earning MVP honors in Equitation on the Flat with an 81 point ride. Mary Smitson and Shelby White also each scored a point in the event while Nicole Brown added a point in Equitation over Fences. In the Western rider's victory, Lindsey Tomko and Morgan Williams each scored in Reining and Missy Gonzales and Allison Orosz each earned a point in Horsemanship.
On the season in Hunter Seat competition, Brown and Healy continue to look impressive for the Bears. Brown has earned six MVP titles, five of which came Over Fences and has scored 11 points while Healy has earned three MVPs. Following closely are Smitson's 10 points earned for the season, five in Equitation on the Flat and five Over Fences. In Western competition, Orosz and Linsday Douglas are the team's high-point scorers with four each for the year, all in Horsemanship. Madelyn Mooney has two Reining MVPs to her credit while Orosz and Williams each have earned one.
Competing for the Bears in Equitation on the Flat will be Cara Wilson, Brown, Smitson and Kelsey Ehlers while Smitson, Brown, Kendra Vicary and Lauren Purkey will participate in Equitation Over Fences.
In Western riding, representing the Bears in horsemanship will be Douglas, Maggie Griffin, Nicole McCoy and Ashleigh Carlson. The reining competition will include McCoy, Katie Buss, Valtie Riddle and Williams.
The competition format will feature a series of head-to-head match ups. The team accumulating the most head-to-head victories will win the overall match. In the event of a tie, the victor will be determined by total points. In addition, there will be an individual award for the most valuable player in each event.
