Equestrian Leads Big 12 In Academic Honors

Ryan Batson was one of two Baylor riders with a perfect 4.00 GPA.

The Baylor equestrian team had a league high 21 members of the 2013 Academic All-Big 12 team, including 19 on the first team, the Big 12 Conference announced on Tuesday.

Two Bears were recognized for their 4.00 GPA's, as Jaden Schupp (Biochemistry) and Ryan Batson(Biology) were each named for the first time.

Joining them on the first team were second-time honerees: Barbara Aitken (Professional Writing), Melanie Appel (Finance), Katherine Berg (International Studies), Taylor Brown (Anthropology), Bryn Lindley (Chemistry), Olivia Rogers (Sports, Sponsorship and Sales Management) and Kim Woodsum(Math).

First-time members of the first team include: Courtney Acarregui (Finance), Sammy Francis (Medical Humanities), Bridget Hoagland (Engineering), Kayla Horn (Fashion Merchandising), Shelbey Jackson (Biology), Dominique Pollett (Family and Consumer Science), Parris Rice (Corporate Communications), Stephanie Schroeder (Biochemistry) and Hannah Troop(Social Work).

Named to the second-team were first-timers Claire Edwards (Biology) and Ashley Garza(Corporate Communications).

First team members consist of those who have maintained a 3.20 or better GPA while the second team selections hold a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA.

To qualify, student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher (either cumulative or the two previous semesters) and must have participated in 60 percent of their team's scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are also eligible.
