Equestrian To Host National Championships

WACO, Texas - For the second straight season Baylor will host the Varsity Equestrian National Championships (VENC) and the school's equestrian team will enter the 2008 VENC as the No. 6 and No. 9 seeds. Junior Nicole Brown will get the opportunity to compete for the first-ever VENC individual national title in Equitation Over Fences., The VENC will be held at the Heart O' Texas Fair Complex, April 17-19.

Baylor's hunter seat squad, currently with a 10-9 record, will enter the VENC show in the No. 6 spot, its same seeding as last year. The Bears finished eighth at last season's national championships in hunter seat competition.

The western team will enter the show as the No. 9 seed after posting a 7-12 record to this point in the season. The Bears posted their best-ever VENC performance last season with a fifth place finish.

Brown, who hails from Zionsville, Ind., will get the opportunity to compete for the VENC's first-ever individual national championship title in fences. Brown was one of four riders selected to compete in a single-elimination tournament format to decide the top individual rider in the nation. Brown has earned 13 points in 17 rides over fences this season and garnered MVP honors eight times in the event.

Twelve Hunter Seat and twelve Western teams are chosen by the VENC Selection Committee and invited to participate. Championship awards are given to the tournament's overall winner as well as the best English and Western programs. The 2008 Hunter Seat teams include, in seeded order, (1) Oklahoma State, (2) Texas A&M, (3) Georgia, (4) South Carolina, (5) Auburn, (6) Baylor, (7) Kansas State, (8) Fresno State, (9) New Mexico State, (10) Delaware State, (11) UT-Martin and (12) Stephen F. Austin. The 2008 Western teams include (1) TCU, (2) Georgia, (3) Oklahoma State, (4) Texas A&M, (5) Kansas State, (6) South Carolina, (7) Auburn, (8) New Mexico State, (9) Baylor, (10) Fresno State, (11) Stephen F. Austin and (12) UT-Martin.

 

 

South Carolina claimed the 2007 overall title while Texas A&M won Western and South Carolina won Hunter Seat.
