WACO - For the seventh straight season Baylor and Waco will host the National Collegiate Equestrian Championship Championship (NCEA) at the Extraco Events Center. The 12th annual championships will begin on Thursday, April 18 and continue through Saturday, April 20. The event is open and admission is free to the public.
The Bears, who finished third overall as a team in 2012, are the defending Hunter Seat National Champions and sit as the No. 1 overall seed. BU will have a bye until Friday morning at 9:00 a.m. and await the winner of No. 8 Kansas State and No. 9 UT Martin.
The Western team will start its title quest on Thursday at 9:00 a.m. as the No. 8 seed, facing off against No. 9 Auburn.
"This championship gets better and better every year and we are thrilled to host it," head coach Ellen Whitesaid. "The Hunter Seat team has a target on its back, but we are ready, and our Western team is ready to peak at the right time."
NCEA is divided into two areas: Hunter Seat and Western. Texas A&M claimed the overall and Western championship in 2012, while Baylor took home the Hunter Seat title.
Each of the two divisions has a 12-team seeded bracket similar to that of the NCAA basketball championships. Teams are seeded from one through 12 and placed accordingly into the bracket. While the Bears are ranked No. 1 in the hunter seat bracket for the first time, Oklahoma State is the top ranked in the western bracket.
The NCEA Championship will begin on Thursday at 9:00 a.m. and continue through Saturday with the Crowning of Champions at 5:30 p.m.
