Sept. 20, 2012
After finishing last season with the Hunter Seat national championship and third place overall team finish, the No.6 Baylor equestrian team will open its 2012-13 season by hosting the fifth-annual Willis Invitational on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 20-21 at the Willis Family Equestrian Center. The Bears are four-time defending champions, and look to make it five in-a-row.
"We have a lot of momentum built up in our program right now," head coach Ellen White said. "It's always nice to open the season at home in front of your own fans, and we want to make sure we win our home tournaments."
The competition will begin at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, as Baylor takes on the combined squad of Miami (Ohio)/Ohio State, with No. 10 New Mexico State facing Delaware State. Each matchup will complete fences and reining before beginning flat and horsemanship. The second round of matches will begin at approximately 1:45 p.m. The Bears will then face Delaware State, while Miami/Ohio State match up with New Mexico State. The day will end with flat and horsemanship, as fences and reining will be completed Saturday morning.
Saturday's events will continue at 9:00 a.m., and Baylor will face New Mexico State, while Miami/Ohio State will take on Delaware State starting at approximately 11:00 a.m.
The competition format will feature a series of head-to-head match ups. The team accumulating the most head-to-head victories will win the overall match. In the event of a tie, the victor will be determined by total points. In addition, there will be an individual award for the most valuable rider in each event.
The event is open to the public and no admission is charged. The award ceremony will happen immediately following the ending of Saturday's rides.
