"This is the second week in a row that we are playing in a really strong field - there are 10 teams ranked inside the top 25 in the country, including us," head coach Jay Goble said. "This is the type of field that we need to be playing against because these are the types of teams we are going to be playing against for national championships and Big 12 championships. I think the girls did really well today."
The Lady Bears (+2; 290) are just three strokes behind top-ranked Southern California (-1; 287) and eight strokes behind tournament leader Tulane (-6; 282). Duke (-5; 283) and UCLA (-5; 283) are tied for second, while Alabama (-3; 285) and Florida (-2; 286) round out the top five.
Hayley Davis and Lauren Taylor each shot even-par 72 in the opening round, placing them in a tie for 20th place. Annette Lyche (+1; 73) and Emma Carberry (+1; 73) are tied for 31st place, while Laura Lonardi (+2; 74) is one stroke behind Lyche and Carberry and is tied for 41st place.
"I would say that probably the standout performance was Annette. Annette was not in our lineup last week in California," Goble said. "She shot 73 today, which is her low round for Baylor. She actually finished with two bogeys and still shot 73. She played really solid today. I was proud of her and proud of her effort."
Monday's second round begins with a 9 a.m. CT shotgun start. Taylor and Davis will tee off from the seventh hole, Lyche and Carberry will begin on the eighth tee and Lonardi will start her round on No. 9. Live scoring is available through www.GolfStat.com.
