NEW ORLEANS –Senior Chelsey Cothran notched her fifth consecutive top-10 finish to lead the 19th-ranked Baylor women’s golf team to a fifth-place showing Tuesday at the Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate.

Cothran, rated 40th nationally by Golfstat, tied for ninth overall, finishing the tournament at 3-over 219. Cothran, who had carded Baylor’s two lowest first- and second-round scores, has finished 17th or better in all six tournaments this season.

No. 19 Baylor posted its fifth consecutive top-five finish, placing fifth after shooting 23-over 887. No. 13 Duke won the Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate by three strokes; No. 17 Colorado came in second at 16-over 880, followed by No. 4 USC (17-over 881) and No. 2 Alabama (20-over 884). Baylor finished six strokes ahead of host and 44th-ranked Tulane (29-over 893).

Colorado’s Alex Stewart took home individual medalist honors, firing a 5-under 211. Only six of the 83 golfers in the field finished the tournament under-par.

“The top teams in this tournament will most likely be competing for a national title later this year,” first-year head coach Jay Goble said. “It was a difficult field, but we posted some good wins over some really good teams.”

Freshman Hayley Davis, rated 24th nationally by Golfstat, finished 4-over 220, tying for 11th. She has finished 11th or better in each of her first six collegiate events. Senior Valerie Sternebeck carded her third top-25 finish of the season, tying for 16th at 6-over 222.

“Chelsey had a great week until the final round,” Goble said. “She didn’t have a great start during the morning, but she played well the rest of the way. Hayley also had a rough start. As conditions worsened during the round, she got better. That’s a true sign of a great player.”

Jaclyn Jansen tied for 38th overall, finishing the tournament at 10-over 226. Kaylin Terry, competing as an individual for the second time this season, shot 24-over 240 to tie for 71st. Freshman Emma Carberry finished 73rd with a 25-over 241.

“Valerie had a very good last two rounds,” Goble said. “She was hitting really good shots during the final round. She had a good finish to the tournament for sure.”

Baylor returns to the links March 16-18 for the Gator Women’s Invitational in Gainesville, Fla.
