Gator Women's Invitational Round Two Results
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The Baylor women’s golf team is in eighth place heading to the final round at the SunTrust Gator Women’s Invitational. The Lady Bears shot 20-over-par 300 in Saturday’s second round at the University of Florida’s Mark Bostick Golf Course.
Hayley Davis (+1, 141) shot 2-under-par 68 to move from 20th to third place, just four strokes back of tournament leader Chirapat Jao-Javanil (-3, 137) of Oklahoma. Davis was one of only three golfers in the 78-player field to break par during the second round at the difficult par-70 course.
“Hayley played great. She’s making a lot of putts and playing really solid out here, and the thing about this golf course is that you have to minimize your mistakes, and Hayley’s doing a good job of that,” head coach Jay Goble said. “The other thing is she’s just making putts. Her short game is solid, and she’s playing really well on a hard golf course.”
Davis opened the tournament with a 3-over-par 73 on Friday, but she had five birdies and only two bogeys in Saturday’s second round.
“She played well yesterday, but today a few more putts fell in. That’s pretty much the only difference,” Goble said. “The thing about this golf course is that you can hit it really similar a bunch of days in a row and shoot a bunch of different scores. Sometimes the breaks go your way, and sometimes you get a few more putts to go in, and I think that’s what happened today.”
Davis is coming off her first career tournament win in last week’s Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate. She recorded five second-place finishes in her first two seasons at Baylor before breaking through in New Orleans.
“I’m proud of Hayley, I knew that after she got that first win her confidence was going to continue to go up, and that’s a big thing for her right now – she feels like she can go out and play well and beat people, and that’s what she’s doing,” Goble said. “She’s only a couple shots back, and as difficult of a golf course as this is, she’s going to again have a chance to go out and beat some good players and move up in the rankings.”
Baylor (+36, 596) remained in eighth place despite Davis’ performance. Emma Carberry (+11, 151), Lauren Taylor (+13, 153) and Laura Lonardi (+15, 155) all shot 8-over-par 78 in the second round, while Natalia Perez (11, 151) shot 6-over 76.
Carberry and Perez are tied for 38th, while Taylor is tied for 48th and Lonardi in tied for 53rd place entering the final round. Sunday’s championship round is scheduled for a 7:30 a.m. CT shotgun start. Live scoring is available at www.GolfStat.com.
