GAINESVILLE, Fla. -The 14th-ranked Baylor women’s golf team shot a final-round 291 to finish ninth Sunday at the SunTrust Gator Women’s Invitational. Baylor posted a three-day tally of 46-over 886, one stroke behind USF, Auburn and Arkansas, which all tied for sixth place.
Host Florida bested second-round co-leader Alabama by one stroke to win the tournament title. Florida finished 24-over 864, followed by Alabama at 25-over 865. Florida State (32-over 872), Georgia (37-877) and Duke (42-over 882) rounded out the top five.
"We played an okay round Sunday," first-year head coach Jay Goble said. "Chelsey (Cothran) showed a lot of heart and played every shot with a purpose.
"Hayley is very close to having a great tournament," Goble said. "She showed us some great things this week and she will be ready for postseason."
Only three golfers finished the weekend under-par. Florida State’s Maria Salinas took home individual medalist honors, shooting 4-under 206. Florida’s Camilla Hedberg and USF’s Christian Miller tied for second at 2-under 208.
Freshman Hayley Davis carded her sixth top-10 finish in seven events this season, tying for ninth at 7-over 217. During Saturday’s second round, Davis fired a career-low 67; she followed with a final-round 73 on Sunday. The nation’s 18th-ranked performer according to Golfstat, Davis has 10 sub-par rounds to her credit this season.
Senior Jaclyn Jansen notched her second top-15 showing, tying for 15th with a 9-over 219. Senior Chelsey Cothran, ranked 30th nationally by Golfstat, carded the low final round by a Baylor golfer, shooting a 70 to tie for 20th at 10-over 220.
"We have a few weeks so we will regroup and work very hard to get better each day," Goble said.
Baylor will return to action April 6-8 for the Rebel Intercollegiate in Oxford, Miss.
