BOERNE, Texas -
Texas Tech shot an eight-over-par 296 Friday and holds a one-shot lead over Indiana after the first round of the 2004 Baylor-Tapatio Springs Shootout. The fourth annual collegiate women's golf tournament is being held at the Tapatio Springs Golf Resort in Boerne, Texas.
Texas Tech was led by Jackie Ey, who shot a first-round 37-34 to lead the field of 113 with a one-under 71 along with Noriko Nakazaki of Notre Dame, who shot a 37-34. Indiana's Danah Ford stands third after carding an even-par 72 (35-37) Friday.
Trailing Texas Tech and Indiana (297) in the team standings is host Baylor, which shot a first-round 303. Missouri stands fourth with a 306, and New Mexico State is in fifth at 311. Rounding out the top 10 are Illinois (sixth place - 314), Rollins College and Iowa (seventh place tie - 315), UTEP (ninth place - 316) and Wisconsin (10th place - 317).
The field of 19 teams includes four Big 12 schools and five Big 10 schools. The field is as follows: Arkansas State, host Baylor, Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota, Missouri, McLennan C.C., Nebraska, New Mexico State, North Texas, Notre Dame, Rollins College, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, UT-Pan American, Texas Tech, UTEP, Wisconsin and Xavier.
Baylor was led by Kelli McKandless, who shot a first round two-over 74 and is tied at eighth individually. Anna Rehnholm and Josefin Svenningsson are tied for 16th after carding four-over 76s Friday. Rounding out the scoring for the Bears was Michaelyn Morgan (77, t21st) and Meredith Jones (78, t27th). Baylor's Sherry Summers (79 - t40th) is competing as an individual.
The Baylor-Tapatio Springs Shootout continues with a second round Saturday of 18 holes beginning at 7:30 a.m. CST at Tapatio Springs Golf Resort, a 6,007-yard, par 72 course.
