OXFORD, Miss. – Behind three golfers in the Top 5, the 17th-ranked Baylor women’s golf team is tied for the overall lead Friday through 18 holes at the BancorpSouth Rebel Intercollegiate.

Baylor shot 4-over 292 to share the first-round lead with host Ole Miss. The first-round leaders are six strokes ahead of third-place Missouri (10-over 298), 10 in front of fourth-place Tulsa (+14 302) and 11 ahead of fifth-place Southern Miss (+15 303).

“Considering the hectic travel day we had Thursday, I’m very pleased with our play after the first round,” first-year head coach Jay Goble said. “We had three flights cancelled and then had a bad flight in. We drove four hours to Oxford and missed our original practice round time. We didn’t practice until almost 5 p.m. yesterday.

“So to come out here and have a share of the lead after our crazy travel schedule is impressive,” Goble said. “It wasn’t our best round of golf, but I was pleased to see how well we handled that type adversity.”

Senior Jaclyn Jansen, one of two golfers to finish Friday under-par, is in second place after shooting 2-under 70, one stroke behind first-round lead Natalie Gleadall (3-under 69) of Ole Miss. Jansen is one of four Baylor golfers in the Top 10 through 18 holes – the most of any tournament team.

“Jaclyn hit the ball unbelievably well,” Goble said. “She made a lot of really good putts. With this being her senior year, she’s working really hard on her game. She wants to finish up really well and that hard work is going to continue to pay off.”

Freshmen Hayley Davis and Stani Schiavone are in a four-way tie for fourth place at 1-over 73, while sophomore Kaylin Terry, who is competing as an individual, is tied for eighth at 2-over 74 with 10 other golfers.

“Stani (Schiavone) did everything well during the first round,” Goble said. “She didn’t score as well as she was playing, but she shot 2-under on the back nine, which, in my opinion, is the hardest part of this course.”

Senior Chelsey Cothran is tied for 29th at 4-over 76, while senior Valerie Sternebeck is tied for 55th at 7-over 79.

“Kaylin (Terry) bogeyed the last two holes to shoot a 74, but still played well all day,” Goble said. “Being a sophomore and for her to go out and post a round that would actually count for us is very good news.”

Play continues Saturday at the BancorpSouth Rebel Intercollegiate at 8 a.m. CDT with the second round. Live scoring will be available at
