OXFORD, Miss. – Senior Jaclyn Jansen shot a second-round 69 to take a one-stroke lead, while the 17th-ranked Baylor women’s golf team extended its lead to four strokes Saturday at the BancorpSouth Rebel Intercollegiate.

Jansen, who trailed by one stroke after the first round, overtook first-round lead Natalie Gleadall of Ole Miss. The Effingham, Ill., native carded the second-lowest round of the day with a 3-under 69 to pull ahead of Gleadall by one.

Baylor posted the low round of the tournament with a second-round 285 to take sole possession of the lead after finishing Friday tied with No. 39 Ole Miss. Baylor sits in first place at 1-over 577, four strokes ahead of Ole Miss at 5-over 581. Missouri is third at 14-over 590, followed by No. 37 Tulsa (15-over 591) and Mississippi State (19-over 595).

“Jaclyn is definitely playing great and all of her hard work is certainly beginning to pay off,” first-year head coach Jay Goble. “Stani (Schiavone) had another great day on the course. Shooting 71 is about as low as she could go with how well she shot Saturday.

“Chelsey (Cothran) doubled 17, but then birdied 18 which is the hardest hole on this course,” Goble said. “She’ll get it together for Sunday’s final round; she’s moving in the right direction.

Jansen is one of three Baylor golfers in the Top 10 and five in the Top 25 through 36 holes. Freshman Stani Schiavone is fifth overall, five strokes behind Jansen at even-par 144. Schiavone fired her career-first sub-par round Saturday with a second-round 71.

Hayley Davis remains at 1-over-par after a second-round 72 and is tied for sixth overall. Chelsey Cothran, ranked 36th nationally by Golfstat, is tied for 20th at 5-over 149. Individual Kaylin Terry is tied for 24th at 6-over 150, while senior Valerie Sternebeck is tied for 42nd at 10-over 154.

“We’re knocking on the door of another tournament win,” Goble said. “In order to win, we have to keep doing what we’ve done the first two rounds. We must stay patient and – the old cliché – take one shot at a time. We can’t get ahead of ourselves because that’s where we’ll get in trouble.”
