WACO, Texas - The Baylor women's golf team shot a second-round low 301 to take a six-stroke lead into the clubhouse through two rounds Monday of the Baylor Spring Invitational at Twin Rivers Golf Club.
Baylor (303-301=604) posted the best score of the afternoon by an impressive seven strokes to overtake first-round leader Oklahoma, which is in second place at 34-over (297-313=610). UALR (301-314=615) is 11 shots back in third place, while Texas Tech (308-308=616) is in fourth place at 40-over. Oregon and Kansas State are tied for fifth at 48-over.
Sophomore Jaclyn Jansen (71-74=145) carded an opening-round 1-under 71 and followed with a second-round 74 to own a one-shot lead through 36 holes. UALR's Mallory Fraiche is in second at 2-over 146, followed by Oklahoma's Ellen Mueller in third at 5-over 149.
"I'm pleased, very pleased," Baylor head women's golf coach Sylvia Ferdon said. "Once again, we came back on the second 18 as we have done all spring."
After a first-round 78, senior Hannah Burke bounced back with a 73 in the second round to finish the day in fifth overall at 7-over 151. Chelsey Cothran and Lene Hafsten-Morch are tied for ninth at 10-over 154, both posting 77s in the first and second rounds.
"The conditions got much harder in the second round," Ferdon said. "But I think our afternoon performance had something to do with our home-course advantage and it paid off for us."
Karianne Hillaas and individual Melanie White are tied for 50th at 19-over 163. Jordan Rhodes and Dina O'Brien, who are both making their season debuts as individuals for the Lady Bears, finished 58th and 72nd, respectively.
"We have a chance to win Tuesday and we need to step up and do it," Ferdon said.
The final round of the Baylor Spring Invitational will tee off with an 8:30 a.m. CDT shotgun start Tuesday at Twin Rivers Golf Club. Live scoring is available at www.BaylorBears.com and www.GolfStatResults.com.
