AUSTIN, Texas - The Baylor women's golf team is tied for fourth place after shooting 9-over-par 297 in Friday's opening round at the Big 12 Women's Championship at the UT Golf Club.
Laura Lonardi led Baylor with a 2-under-par 70, placing her in a tie for third place, just one stroke behind tournament leaders Chirapat Jao-Javanil from Oklahoma (-3, 69) and Yupaporn Kawinpakorn from Kansas (-3, 69). Hayley Davis shot 2-over 74, placing her in a tie for 14th place, and Natalia Perez is tied for 23rd place after shooting 4-over 76. Hadas Libman shot 5-over 77 to tie for 29th place, and Louise Gateau-Chovelon carded a 6-over 78 to tie for 34th place.
Baylor heads to the second of three rounds at the tournament just six strokes back of leader Oklahoma (+3, 291). The Lady Bears also trail Kansas State (+5, 293) and Texas Tech (+7, 295), and BU is tied with Texas and Kansas at 9-over 297.
Lonardi had the only eagle in the 45-player field when she carded a 3 on the par-5 ninth hole. She leads the tournament in par-5 scoring with an average of 4.25.
Baylor had eight birdies during the opening round, with two each from Davis, Lonardi, Libman and Perez.
As a team, Baylor shot 3-under-par on No. 9 and 1-under on No. 2.
Davis is tied for second in par 5 scoring, with an average of 4.50.
Lonardi is tied for seventh in par-4 scoring average at even-par 4.00.
Davis, Gateau-Chovelon and Lonardi each had 13 pars in the first round, tying for fifth-most in the field.

"We didn't have our A-games on today, but the girls kept fighting for every shot," head coach Jay Goble said. "We have a lot of golf left to play the next two days, and if they get on their A-games we'll be in good shape."
Baylor players begin Saturday's second round on the first hole at 8:50 a.m. CT. Gateau-Chovelon tees off first, followed by Libman at 9 a.m., Perez at 9:10 a.m., Davis at 9:20 a.m. and Lonardi at 9:30 a.m. The Lady Bears will be paired with players from Texas and Kansas in the second round.
