LAWRENCE, Kan. – With the course plagued by weather delays for the second time in three days, the 18th-ranked Baylor women’s golf team finished third Sunday at the 2012 Big 12 Women’s Golf Championship.

Baylor’s third-place finish matches its highest Big 12 Championship finish in program history; the Lady Bears also finished third in 2001, 2005 and 2007.

The Lady Bears shot a final-round 297 to conclude the weekend at 72-over (313-302-297=912). No. 31 Oklahoma held on to win the conference title by a seven-stroke margin; No. 30 Texas finished second at 71-over (325-298-288=911), one stroke ahead of the Lady Bears.

“It was a little bit of a disappoint week for us,” head coach Jay Goble said. “Not disappointing in effort, though. Just disappointing in knowing that we came up short.

“With the rainy weather, we got off to a bad start,” Goble said,” and, for the most part, we hung in there. I’m not to trying to make excuses, but I really believe that we didn’t get one good break all week."

For only the second time in program history, Baylor had multiple golfers make the Big 12 All-Tournament Team – freshman Hayley Davis and senior Chelsey Cothran.

Davis, ranked 25th nationally by Golfstat, narrowly missed winning the first Big 12 title in program history, tying for second overall – one stroke behind Texas A&M’s Mary Michael Maggio, the Big 12 individual champion. Davis (75-72-73=220) and Oklahoma’s Chirapat Jao-Javanil (75-70-75=220) tied for second at 10-over. Davis tied the program mark for the lowest individual finish at the Big 12 Championship; Hannah Burke finished second at the 2010 event in Norman, Okla.

Cothran shot a final-round 75 to finish the tournament seventh overall at 9-over (78-72-75=225).

“Once again, Hayley and Chelsey played well,” Goble said. “Hayley had a great chance to win it all, but had a few bogeys that let it slip away. She has three more years of college golf ahead of her and she’ll be back here again for sure.”

Senior Jaclyn Jansen posted Baylor’s best final round with an even-par 72 to tie for 20th at 16-over (82-78-72=232). Freshman Stani Schiavone tied for 33rd at 21-over (78-80-79=237) and senior Valerie Sternebeck tied for 39th at 26-over (84-81-77=242).

The NCAA Division I Women’s Golf selection announcement will be made at 8 p.m. CDT on Mon., April 30. The 2012 NCAA Division I Women’s Golf Championship will begin May 10-12 at three regional host sites – State College, Pa.; Columbus, Ohio; and Erie, Colo.
