STANFORD, Calif. - The Baylor women's golf team is in sixth place after Friday's second round at the NCAA West Regional. The Lady Bears shot 7-over-par 291 in the tournament's second round at the Stanford Golf Course, improving four strokes from their first round score.

Baylor (+18; 295-291=586) is just one stroke behind fifth place Stanford (+17; 301-284=585). Purdue (+9; 291-286=577) is tied with first round leader Vanderbilt (+9; 289-288=577) for the lead going into Saturday's championship round. Top seed Southern California (+11; 290-289=579) dropped to third place, and South Carolina (+13; 296-285=581) is in fourth place.

The top eight teams and two lowest-scoring individuals on non-advancing teams will move on to the NCAA Division I Women's Golf Championship in Athens, Ga. Kent State (+28, 302-294=596) is in ninth place, making it the first team outside the cut, and Baylor leads the Golden Flashes by 10 strokes.

"I think today was comparative to yesterday," head coach Jay Goble said. "We stayed consistent and steady out there. The team did a really good job of staying patient on a really tough golf course. It does not offer you a lot of birdies or easy chances to score. You have to stay on your game the whole day. I am proud of them so far. I think they have done a really good job."

Laura Lonardi, a freshman from Verona, Italy, leads all Baylor players and is tied for 12th place after shooting 2-over-par 73 in the second round. Lonardi (+2; 71-73=144) is six strokes behind tournament leader Annie Park (-4, 67-71=138) of Southern Cal.

"Hayley Davis, Lauren Taylor and Laura Lonardi all played really solid rounds of golf," Goble said. "The one thing that they are doing really well is that they are taking it one shot at a time, which is really cool."

Davis and Taylor each shot a second round 1-over-par 72 after both shooting 2-over-par 73 in Thursday's opening round. Davis (+3; 73-72=145) and Taylor (+3; 73-72=145) are tied for 17th place with five other players. Emma Carberry (+10; 78-74=152) shot four strokes better than her first round on Friday and is now tied for 58th place, while Natalia Perez (+15; 81-76=157) improved by five strokes and is tied for 89th place.

"Emma Carberry played much better than yesterday," Goble said. "She did not have her best finish and still shot a 74. I think she is gaining some confidence and is hitting the ball better. Look for her to come out here tomorrow and shoot a good score for us."

Saturday's final round tee times are determined according to the standings through 36 holes. Baylor will tee off from the 10th hole starting with Perez at 10:36 a.m. CT. Carberry, Taylor, Davis and Lonardi will follow in 11-minute intervals, respectively. Live scoring for all three rounds is at www.golfstat.com.
