2012 NCAA Championship Results (Third Round)

FRANKLIN, Tenn. – No. 17 Baylor shot a third-round 300 Thursday and is tied for 18th through 54 holes of the 2012 NCAA Division I Women’s Golf Championship at the Vanderbilt Legends Golf Course.

No. 2 Alabama remains atop the leaderboard but the Crimson Tide saw its lead shrink from 11 strokes after two rounds to just two strokes after three. Alabama (13-over 877) is up two strokes on No. 3 USC (15-over 879) and six on No. 33 Purdue, No. 25 South Carolina and No. 27 Virginia. At 39-over 903 and tied with No. 19 Pepperdine, the Lady Bears are only five strokes behind 13th-place N.C. State.

Only six golfers are under-par after three rounds. Oklahoma’s Chirapat Jao-Javanil and Arizona State’s Giulia Molinaro are tied for the individual lead at 4-under 212. Alabama’s Brooke Pancake, the leader through 36 holes, and LSU’s Tessa Teachman are tied for third at 3-under 213. South Carolina’s Katie Burnett and Virginia’s Portland Rosen, the leader after 18 holes, are tied for fifth at 1-under 215.

“What happened Thursday has been our story all week long,” first-year head coach Jay Goble said. “We get in trouble early in the round and our problems are compounded – one mistake leads two and two leads to three.

“It’s ok to make a mistake, but you have to follow a bad shot with a good shot,” Goble said. “We haven’t been able to do that. We’ve short-sighted ourselves all week. It’s time to pull it all together for one more round.”

Senior All-Big 12 performer Chelsey Cothran had the Lady Bears’ low score for the third round, shooting a 73 and climbing into a 64th-place tie at 11-over 227. Cothran’s 73 matches the second-lowest round by a Baylor golfer this week. Senior Jaclyn Jansen continues to be highest Lady Bear on the leaderboard. Jansen shot a third-round 74 and is tied for 34th overall at 7-over 223.

Senior Valerie Sternebeck is tied for 71st at 12-over 228, while freshmen Hayley Davis and Stani Schiavone are tied for 92nd at 15-over 231.

The 2012 NCAA Division I Women’s Golf Championship concludes Friday with the final round. Baylor, paired with Texas and Arkansas, will tee off No. 1 beginning at 7:30 a.m. CDT. Live scoring will be available at www.golfstat.com.
