ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - Baylor women's golf finished in sixth place after shooting a 10-over-par 302 in Tuesday's final round of the 33rd Branch Law Firm/Dick McGuire Invitational at the par-73 UNM Championship Course.
The Lady Bears (+18; 298-294-302=894) entered the day in fourth place and climbed into the lead with only seven holes remaining, but they combined to shoot 7-over-par over the finals seven holes to fall into sixth. Iowa State claimed the tournament title at 10-over 886, followed by UNLV, Ohio State and UC Davis in a three-way tie for second place at 11-over 887, and Northwestern finished one shot ahead of Baylor in fifth.
"We struggled to finish our round today, and it's quite difficult considering we had a three-shot lead with seven holes to go," head coach Jay Goble said. "I don't like to hear excuses, but I think a little bit of the inexperience with this team showed at the end. They have scoreboards all over this golf course, and I know it was pretty hard to walk by one and not see that we were leading with about seven or eight holes to go.
"It was pretty difficult to swallow, but it's a very young team, and they're just getting into the swing of things with college golf," Goble added. "We had two sophomores and two freshmen play, so for them to hang in there the way they did, I'm proud of them, I know they're going to get better and I know we didn't have our best game this week and we still played okay."
Sophomore Hayley Davis (+1; 73-71-76=220) finished tied for ninth individually at 1-over 220, matching her finish from last week's season-opening Ptarmigan Classic. Emma Carberry (+4; 76-72-75=223) tied for 21st, and Lauren Taylor (+5; 76-75-73=224) was one stroke back of Carberry in a tie for 25th place. Carberry started the day 3-over through three holes, but she carded a team-best five birdies in the round to help her finish just 2-over for the day.
Taylor shot even-par 73 in the final round to move up 11 spots after entering the final round tied for 36th. She was 2-under entering the final two holes, but a pair of bogeys dropped her back to even par. For the second straight tournament, Taylor improved her score each round.
"As the days and the rounds go along, Lauren gets more and more comfortable," Goble said. "She did that last week as well, we got to the final round and she was ready to go, but we just need to work on getting her ready as soon as we start our first round. She's a solid player, and she's going to be a great player for us for years to come."
Freshman Annette Lyche (+9; 74-76-78=228) tied for 35th at 9-over and improved by three strokes over her first collegiate tournament last week, while junior Kaylin Terry (+13; 75-79-78=232) shot 13-over and finished tied for 49th place. Freshman Natalia Perez (+24; 76-84-83=243) played as an individual in her first collegiate tournament.
The Lady Bears have more than three weeks to prepare for their next tournament, the Tar Heel Invitational on Oct. 12-14 in Chapel Hill, N.C.
