LAS CRUCES, N.M. - Baylor women's golf junior Jaclyn Jansen carded the lowest individual round in school history, registering a 7-under 65 Monday at the Price's "Give `Em Five" Intercollegiate.
Jansen bested the previous school record (67) by two strokes. Four different golfers shared the previous school record for lowest round - Sian Reddick (2005), Allison Martin (2006), Hannah Burke (2007) and Lene Hafsten-Morch (2008).
"I tried to remain calm throughout the day," Jansen said. "Once I got my third birdie on the back nine to go to 6-under, I started getting butterflies in my stomach.
"Then Coach Ferdon and Coach Cox told me to relax and take it each shot as it comes," Jansen said. "But I was taking a breath before each shot."
The Effingham, Ill., native finished Monday's round holding a four-stroke lead. New Mexico State's Suterra Chanachai and UC Irvine teammates Michelle Park and Patty Chawalitmetha are tied for second at 3-under 69. Six golfers, including Baylor's Lene Hafsten-Morch are tied for fifth place at 1-under 71.
The Lady Bears are in first place after 18 holes at 3-under 285, one stroke ahead of second-place UC Irvine (2-under 286). Host New Mexico State is in third place at 1-over 289, four strokes behind the tournament-leading Lady Bears.
"We had a great day out on the course, especially with Jaclyn (Jansen) playing so well," head coach Sylvia Ferdon said. "It was nice to have the combo of Jaclyn, Lene (Hafsten-Morch) and Chelsey (Cothran) click for us."
"We need to come out Tuesday and keep our attention on managing our game one hole at a time," Ferdon said.
The second round of the Price's "Give `Em Five" Invitational will tee off at 9:30 a.m. CDT Tuesday at the New Mexico State University Golf Course.
