CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The Baylor women’s golf team is tied for second place after shooting an even-par 288 in Friday’s first round at the 37th annual Ruth’s Chris Tar Heel Invitational at the UNC Finley Golf Course.
“They all fought for every shot,” head coach Jay Goble said. “You are going to hit a bad shot every once in a while, but they accepted it and tried to make the next shot.”
The Bears (E; 288) are tied for second place with North Carolina and trail tournament-leader Virginia (-2; 286), while LSU (+6; 294) and Duke (+8; 296) round out the top five.
Hayley Davis leads the tournament after matching a career-low with a 5-under-par 67. She holds a two-stroke lead over Virginia’s Brittany Altomare (-3; 69).
“Hayley has played great for us for the last year and a half,” Goble said. “She came back this semester a little bit rusty, and her game wasn’t quite where she wanted it. She’s been putting in some hard work the last couple of weeks, and it was really fun to watch her play golf today, because her hard work is starting to pay off and she is starting to get into form. She just played great.”
Davis made six birdies and just one bogey in the round. She took the turn at 3-under after recording birdies on her eighth and ninth holes, and after opening the back nine with a bogey, she carded three more birdies over her final seven holes.
Lauren Taylor (E; 72) is tied with eight other players for ninth place, while Annette Lyche (+2; 74) is tied for 20th and Kaylin Terry (+3; 75) is tied for 30th overall. Emma Carberry (+8, 80) was only 2-over through 12 holes, but she had a quadruple bogey on her 16th hole and shot 6-over-par over the last six holes.
Tee times for Saturday’s second round begin at 7:51 a.m. CDT, and teams will play a third and final round on Sunday. Live scoring is available through www.GolfStat.com.
