Women's Golf 2nd After Day One at New Mexico State
Oct. 13, 2008
LAS CRUCES, N.M. - The Baylor women's golf team tallied a first round 297 at the Price's "Give `Em Five" Invitational to finish second after the first day of play Monday. Baylor is sits just four shots back of tournament leader, UC Irvine, with two days remaining in the invite. "I thought we really hit the ball well today. We did miss a few birdie attempts and that's the difference right now," said head coach Sylvia Ferdon. "We just need to come out the next two days and not try and force anything. If we just keep playing and let it happen, we'll be in a good position come Wednesday." Much like she's done all season, Hannah Burke continues her mainstay in the top five. Burke, a junior from Hertfordshire, England, fired an even-par 72 during the first 18 holes to sit in a three-way tie for second place individually. Baylor's Lene Hafsten-Morch is one shot back of Burke in fifth place, as the sophomore from Billingstad, Norway fired a 1-over 73 on Monday. Despite a triple-bogey on the par-five 15th hole, Jaclyn Jansen recorded three birdies during the first round to card a 2-over 74. Jansen is currently tied for ninth overall. Also competing for Baylor was junior Natalie Hocott and sophomore Morgan Chambers. Hocott and Chambers both tallied a 78 for the Bears to round out play for Baylor. Baylor will begin the second round of the Give `Em Five Invite Tuesday morning with an 8:30 a.m. MDT shotgun start.
