CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Baylor women's golf finished tied for second place at the Ruth's Criss Tar Heel Invitational, and Hayley Davis and Lauren Taylor each finished in the top 5 individually, as the Lady Bears shot 294 in Sunday's final round at the UNC Finley Golf Course.
Baylor (+21; 288-303-294=885) tied with Mississippi (+21; 299-297-289=885) for second place behind tournament host North Carolina (+8; 288-293-291=872). It's the second time in three tournaments this season the Lady Bears have finished in second place.
"To finish second in the field that we did is awesome, and it's going to give our team more confidence to truly believe that we can beat the best teams in the country," head coach Jay Goble said. "We went out there and beat a lot of really good teams this week, and it's always a good thing to beat teams that are ranked ahead of you. It's going to help us build some momentum for the future."
Davis (-3; 67-73-73=213) held a two-stroke lead after Friday's opening round and carried a one-shot lead into Sunday looking for her first career tournament title, but Florida's Isabelle Lendl (-6; 70-71-69=210) was four shots better in the final round to take first place. It was the fifth career second-place finish for Davis, and she has finished in the top 10 in all three events this season and in 12 of 15 tournaments in her Baylor career.
"Hayley's been in this position a couple times, and you have to learn how to win," Goble said. "She keeps putting herself in good position, and she's learning every single time. It just shows how great of a player she is that she can always put herself in contention. She's going to learn how to win, and I truly believe that when she does win the floodgates are going to open and she's going to win a lot."
Taylor (-1; 72-73-70; 215), a freshman from Rugby, England, shot the lowest round of her Baylor career to move up three spots and finish tied for fourth. Her final-round 70 was one stroke back of Lendl for the best round of the day.
"Lauren is going to be a big part of our future," Goble said. "She's just such a solid player. She hits a lot of fairways, hits a lot of greens, and she just doesn't make a lot of mistakes on the golf course. It was great to see her play well, and I expect her to continue to play well. As she gets more comfortable out here, she and Hayley are going to be our two best players for quite a while."
Baylor's next tournament is its final event of the fall season, as the Lady Bears head to the UTSA Alamo Invitational, which begins Oct. 28 in San Antonio, Texas.
