CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - The Baylor women's golf team won their second tournament of the fall 2001 season today at the 2001 Islander Fall Classic hosted by Texas A&M Corpus Christi. The Bears shot a three-round 921 (300-312-309) to finish 38 strokes ahead of second place finisher North Texas.
The Bears again set a record in the low tournament 54-hole category after shooting 921. Senior Nicole Johnson finished first individually after posting scores of 71-76-81 (228).
Behind Johnson, Tara Bateman finished second after posting 230 (75-77-78), sophomore Michaelyn Morgan finished tied for fourth with a 233 (76-80-77), sophomore Kelli McKandless took the eighth place spot with a three-round 236 (79-79-78), junior Hanna-Sofia Svenningsson finished tied for 12th after shooting 241 (78-87-76), and junior Melanie Hagewood entered as an individual and posted a 232 (81-73-78) tying her for third place.
North Texas took the second place spot after shooting 959, Texas A&M Corpus Christi came in third (964), Notre Dame was fourth (968) and McLennan Community College came in fifth (988).
This tournament concludes the 2001 season for the 36th ranked Bears, the 2002 season will begin February 25 at the Central District Classic in Parrish, Florida.
