Women's Golf Adds Talented Freshman

Jan. 15, 2009

WACO, Texas - Head women's golf coach Sylvia Ferdon announced Thursday the addition of Chelsey Cothran to the Lady Bears' spring roster. Cothran enrolled at Baylor in January as a true freshman.

Cothran, who was home schooled and graduated in December, is currently ranked 95th in the Golfweek/Titleist Junior Rankings. During summer play, Cothran qualified for the 2008 USGA Women's Amateur Championship and 2008 USGA Girls' Junior Championship.

"Chelsey's resume is outstanding. It gives credibility to our university and our golf program, to have such a talented player choose Baylor," Ferdon said. "With Chelsey graduating early from high school and joining the Lady Bears for the spring, I look at the potential of our lineup to be one of the strongest I have ever coached at Baylor."

Cothran, a native of Springdale, Ark., was named Golfweek's Player of the Week during the first week of October after winning the Texas Junior Tour's Sooner Invitational with a two-day 2-over 146 (71-75).

"It is exciting for me to coach a player of this caliber," Ferdon said. "I know she is highly motivated and dedicated to play and to compete at the highest level. I look for her to make an immediate impact for the Lady Bears."

Baylor opens its spring season Feb. 9-11 at the Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge in Palos Verdes, Calif.
