WACO, Texas – The Baylor women’s golf team is headed to Baton Rouge, La., for the 2014 Tiger Golf Classic, hosted by Louisiana State University.
The three-day, 54-hole event, which begins Friday, is held at the par-72, 6,305-yard University Club. The 15-team field includes Arkansas, Baylor, Central Florida, Denver, Kentucky, Louisiana-Monroe, LSU, Missouri, Notre Dame, Purdue, SMU, TCU, Tulane, UNCW and UTSA.
“It’s known to be a pretty challenging golf course,” head coach Jay Goble said. “It’s good for us to play on challenging courses because it helps us prepare better for postseason play. One of the things I like for us to do is find good teams and challenging courses that are going to prepare us for the big tournaments at the end of the year.”
“We have never been to this tournament before and I don’t think any of us have ever been to this golf course before either,” Goble added. “It’s a totally new experience for us.”
Baylor, which is ranked No. 52 in the latest GolfStat rankings, will be competing in the tournament for the first time in program history. Arkansas shot 35-over 899 to win the 2013 Tiger Golf Classic a season ago.
The Lady Bears’ lineup for the tournament includes junior Hayley Davis, sophomore Laura Lonardi, freshmen Louise Gateau-Chovelon and Hadas Libman, and sophomore Natalia Perez. Freshman Maggie Beth Byers will compete as an individual.
Three teams in the 15-team field are ranked in the top 25: No. 4 Arkansas, No. 16 Central Florida and No. 17 LSU.
“The teams here are a bunch of teams that are sneaky good,” said Goble. “There really are a lot of good teams here.”
Tee times begin at 8:30 a.m. CT on both Friday and Saturday, and Sunday’s final round will begin with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. CT. Perez will be the first Baylor player to tee off, as she begins on the first hole at 8:50 a.m. She’ll be followed in 10-minute intervals by Libman, Gateau-Chovelon, Lonardi, Davis and Byers, respectively.
