Lady Golfer Makes the Trip to NCAA Championships

WACO, Texas - Baylor junior golfer Melanie Hagewood will be making the trip to Auburn, Wash. to play in the 2002 NCAA Championship golf tournament on May 21-24.

This is the first time in Baylor history that a women's golfer has ever qualified for the championships as an individual.

At the NCAA Central Regional last week at the Forest Akers Golf Course in East Lansing, Mich., Hagewood finished fourth after she eagled the 17th hole during the final round, posting scores of 70-78-77 (225), the best finish ever from a Baylor women's golfer at the Central Regional.

Fellow golfer Kelli McKandless also finished in the top 15 at the Central Regional after carding 79-77-75 (231) to give her the tie for 11th place.

The Bears finished 10th of 21 teams at the Central Regional, with rounds of 309-318-309 (936), the best finish ever from Baylor's women's golf program.

The top eight teams from each region qualified to play in the NCAA Championships as well as selected individuals from each region.
