WACO, Texas – Baylor women’s golf released its nine-tournament 2010-11 schedule, head coach Sylvia Ferdon announced Thursday. Only two of Baylor’s nine regular-season tournaments are in the state of Texas, including the Baylor Spring Invitational at Twin Rivers in April 2011.
“I feel this season’s schedule is one of the strongest we have had in a few years,” Ferdon said. “We’ve added one of college golf’s most competitive spring events – the Central District Invitational – to our schedule. We have won the Central District before and it should give us a stronger strength of schedule which will factor into postseason invitations.”
The Lady Bears open the fall slate at the Ptarmigan Ram Fall Classic (Sept. 13-14) in Fort Collins, Colo. Baylor won the Ptarmigan Classic back in 2005. Missouri’s Johnie Imes Invitational (Oct. 4-5) and Price’s “Give-Em Five” Invitational (Oct. 11-13) are next for the Bears before finishing fall play at The Alamo Invitational (Oct. 31-Nov. 2) in San Antonio.
Baylor’s 2011 spring schedule begins with consecutive dates in the Sunshine State – Feb. 13-15 at the UCF Challenge in Sorrento, Fla., and Feb. 21-22 at the Central District Invitational in Parrish, Fla. The Lady Bears won the Central District Invitational in 2006 and finished fifth at the UCF Challenge last year. BU then heads west for the UNLV Spring Invitational (March 7-9) and the MountainView Collegiate (March 25-26) before returning home to host the Baylor Spring Invitational (April 11-12) at Twin Rivers Golf Club. At last season’s Baylor Spring Invitational, the Lady Bears won by an 11-stroke margin over Oklahoma, while Jaclyn Jansen claimed individual medalist honors.
“We are hosting the Baylor Spring Invitational for the third year and it has received entries from Kansas, Missouri, Oklahoma and Texas Tech – all very strong Big 12 rivals,” Ferdon said. “It is nice to see our tournament starting to gain credibility.”
The 2011 Big 12 Women’s Golf Championships will be held at The Club at Hawthorne in Columbia, Mo., April 22-24. The NCAA Regional tournaments are set for May 5-7, while the 30th annual NCAA Division I Women’s Golf Championships are May 17-20 at The Traditions Club in Bryan, Texas.
“Of course, our main goal is making it to the NCAA Championships,” Ferdon said. “I very much want to see our program back at that level, as this year it is hosted by Texas A&M at The Traditions Club in Bryan.”
