WACO, Texas - Women's golf head coach Jay Goble released Baylor's nine-tournament 2012-13 schedule on Tuesday. The Lady Bears will play eight tournaments out of state, including tournaments in Los Angeles and New Orleans.
"The schedule we have for the 2012-13 season could be the strongest this team has ever played," Goble said. "We are playing in three tournaments which consistently rank among the top five tournaments for field strength in women's collegiate golf. This will give our very young team a lot of competition to play against the top teams in the country week in and week out."
Coming off one of the best season's in program history in Goble's first year as head coach, the Lady Bears open the 2012-13 season when they travel to Fort Collins, Colo., for the Ptarmigan Ram Fall Classic (Sept. 10-11), hosted by Colorado State. Baylor then looks to defend its first of three tournament titles from a season ago when it travels to Albuquerque, N.M. for New Mexico's Dick McGuire Invitational a week later (Sept. 17-18).
BU plays in North Carolina's Tar Heel Invitational (Oct. 12-14) in Chapel Hill, N.C., and the Bears close out the fall season at the UTSA Alamo Invitational (Oct. 28-30) at Briggs Ranch Golf Club.
Baylor plays three February tournaments to open the spring season. The Lady Bears play at Miami's Hurricane Invitational (Feb. 4-5), Ohio State's Northrop Grumman Invitational (Feb. 11-13) in Los Angeles, and Tulane's Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate Championship (Feb. 24-26).
The Lady Bears also travel to Gainesville, Fla., for the SunTrust Gator Women's Invitational, hosted by Florida (March 15-17), and they close out regular season play at the BancorpSouth Rebel Intercollegiate (April 5-7), a tournament Baylor won after leading all three rounds a season ago.
The Big 12 Championship is scheduled for April 19-21 in Ames, Iowa, and NCAA Regionals are slated for May 9-11 (sites TBD), followed by the NCAA Championship (May 21-24) at the University of Georgia Golf Course in Athens, Ga.
"Our goal just like it is every year is to strive to get better every day," Goble said. "If we can do that we will be ready for postseason. We will prepare to win the Big 12 Championship and compete to win a National Championship next spring in Athens."
Baylor returns three golfers from last season's team that claimed three tournament titles on its way to a 16th-place finish at the 2012 NCAA Championship. Among the returners is sophomore Hayley Davis, who became the first All-American in program history last year. Davis is joined by sophomore Emma Carberry and junior Kaylin Terry, and Baylor welcome's three incoming freshmen in Annette Lyche, Natalia Perez and Lauren Taylor.
"We had a great year last year and we are looking forward to building on that foundation for the future," Goble said. "Our team is full of players with international tournament experience, so even though they are young, they are not new to playing big-time tournament golf."
