WACO, Texas - Baylor head women's golf coach Sylvia Ferdon announced the signing of Stani Schiavone to a National Letter of Intent for the 2011-12 academic year Thursday.
Schiavone, a native of Bangor, Pa., currently ranks 87th out of the top 100 in her class in the Junior Golf Scoreboard rankings. She has 12 top-five finishes to her credit in American Junior Golf Association (AJGA) events, including a pair of second-place finishes at the 2007 Rhode Island Classic and 2008 Natural Resource Partners Bluegrass Junior.
"Stani is a perfect fit for our golf program," Ferdon said. "She has national experience as a player, has a high academic ranking and comes from a very athletic family."
A two-time United States Golf Association (USGA) Women's Amateur Public Links qualifier in 2007 and 2010, she also qualified for the 2008 USGA Women's Open Sectional and 2009 USGA Girls Junior Championship. Schiavone, who prepped at Bangor Area (Pa.) High School, was named to the AJGA HP Scholastic Junior All-American team in 2009 and 2010.
"She's a well-rounded athlete who has competed in track & field, basketball, softball and soccer," Ferdon said. "And, with our sport becoming much more athletic, she's the type of golfer we're looking for at Baylor. She's someone who has already been pushed to work hard, learned to be patient and has the determination to get the job done."
The Baylor women's golf team opens the spring portion of its spring schedule Feb. 13-15 at the UCF Challenge in Sorrento, Fla.
