Rebecca Hornbacher enters her second year as assistant coach with the Bears and her third year at Baylor as the 2000 season begins.
Hornbacher came to Baylor from Nebraska in 1998 as a graduate assistant goalkeeper coach. In that role, she helped Baylor goalkeeper Dawn Greathouse lead the conference in goals against average, both overall and in league play. She watched as Greathouse was named to the all-Big XII first team and all-America third team.
In the spring of 1999, she suddenly found herself at the helm of the Baylor program following head coach Randy Waldrum's departure. When head coach Nick Cowell came aboard, Hornbacher was promoted to full-time assistant coach.
A two-year letterwinner for the Huskers, Hornbacher reaped NSCAA/Umbro third-team All-American honors after her first season in goal. Her 0.51 goals against average was the best in the Big 12 Conference and fifth best in the nation. Her impressive season earned Hornbacher listings on the All-Central Region first team, All-Big 12 Tournament team, All-Big 12 Conference second team, and Big 12 Conference Academic Honor Roll.
As a senior, her goals against average of .078 was second best in the Big 12 and ranked 15th in the nation. Once again, Hornbacher claimed All-Central Region second-team honors as well as being an All-Big 12 second-team selection.
Hornbacher finished her career as the owner of every Husker all-time and season record for goalkeepers. She also holds every individual season goalkeeping record and the Husker mark for most saves in a game. She was twice given Nebraska's Most Consistent Player Award.
After graduating from high school, she started in goal for the University of Virginia's first two games but was granted a medical hardship after breaking her leg against North Carolina-Greensboro. In 1994, she started all 21 games for Virginia, leading the ACC and setting a school record 11 shutouts. Her 0.80 goals against average led the ACC and helped UVA achieve a No. 10 national ranking.
Hornbacher graduated with a bachelor's of arts degree in psychology from Nebraska in 1997, and she earned her masters degree in Sport Management from Baylor in 2000.
She recently received her NSCAA National Coaching Certificate.
