The Baylor Bears opened their 1999 home season
with a 6-1 win over the University of San Diego in
the second game of the Bear Invitational.
First round action had TCU shutting out LSU 7-0.
Senior midfielder turned forward Nikki Hales
recorded her third career hat trick as she put in
three goals. Senior forward Courtney Saunders
added two more along with one assist. Gina
Castellano, a junior defender scored the team's
final goal.
Hales started things off in the 14th minute with a
goal off an assist from sophomore midfielder Juli
Goin. Courtney Saunders put in her second goal of
the season in the 27th minute with help from
junior defender Jenni Eden.
Hales then put up back-to back goals with one in
the 29th minute off of Saunders and another in the
38th minute.
In the second half, Hales assisted Saunders in the
69th minute before Castellano got the Bears' final
goal in the 70th minute. San Diego avoided the
shutout when Sufia Wali scored in the 84th minute.
"It was a great team effort tonight. The girls
deserve a pat on the back for the way they played.
I was very pleased," head coach Nick Cowell said.
The Bears move to 2-1 on the season. San Diego
falls to 1-1. Baylor will host TCU Sunday at 1
p.m.
