WACO, Texas - Baylor soccer earned a 1-0 exhibition win over Sam Houston State on Tuesday night at Betty Lou Mays Field. The Bears were fueled by an early second half goal from senior Alexa Wilde in the first of two exhibition matches before starting the 2014 regular season.
The teams played to a 0-0 draw after the first 45 minutes of action as each team had three shots and two saves in the half. BU started sophomore goalie Sara Martinson before turning to senior goalie Michelle Kloss for the second half.
With a free kick after an SHSU foul early in the second half, Katie Daigle served a beautiful pass from midfield to the middle of the box. In a heap of traffic, Wilde chested the ball to the ground, turned and fired a laser past Bearkat goalie Magen Ross to the top right corner for the game-winning goal in the 57th minute.
From there, Baylor's trademark defense settled in. BU allowed zero corner kicks all night while ending with a 9-5 shots edge and 5-3 edge in shots on goal.
"In the second half we did a lot better," said BU Co-Head Coach Marci Jobson. "We won the first and second balls, which is very good for us. I was really happy for Alexa. She's coming back from an injury and didn't play much soccer over the summer, but these are the types of things she can do. She struggled a bit in the first half but played much better in the second half as she adjusted and scored a goal."
Next up for the Bears is a trip to Gainesville, Fla., to face No. 8 Florida at 6 p.m. CT on Saturday in BU's last exhibition match before kicking off the season at home Aug. 22 vs. Rice.
